Johns Creek has a number of ways to enjoy recreational activities both indoors and out, there’s Autrey Mill Nature Preserve, Jones Bridge Trail, Newton Recreation, and a number of new just opened parks catering to children and pet walking.


Autrey Mill Nature Preserve


Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center, as it is properly named, is probably the most well developed of the parks with a number of dedicated themes and scenarios. Hiking is the first of the recreational activities to be done here. Some have wooden board laying out a pristine walk, while some are mulch. The different trails are clearly marked with signs as if it were a metropolis but there is no sign of anything but nature along these trails. They are called by names like Forest Trail and Forest Loop trail. There is also a sign directing you to the Forest Trail Visitor’s Center. Along these walks expect to see rabbits and also a pond with ducks circling. You might even see stone figures of gnomes, puppies, and the like place for amusement. Expect a lot of wildlife and bird watching on these hikes. Flowers are plentiful and some like the Lady Slippers are sort of rare. These lady Slippers come into view right after seeing the monkeys. Scenes of short waterfalls and other river type sights are here as well. Fraught with wooden fences and wooden bridges, these trails are a reminder of days past and a simpler time. Autrey Mill Nature Preserve offers a replica of an original Indian Hut of the 18th century variety. It has housing rescued from 19th and 20th centuries and can be seen on group tours or orchestrated by computer audio tours from boxes that you only need to activate by pressing a button.

After 3 miles of hiking upon this trail, you will come upon a nice lake. Whether this lake or the Chattahoochee, great fishing abounds here. Brim, Bass, Trout, and Catfish are among the varieties of sought after fishing in these waters.

Beautiful City of Johns Creek Georgia


Please consider a new industrious community located in Georgia. It was the thirteenth highest earning city in city in the United States according to Money Magazine. The influx in the 21st century of computer generated businesses started a modern gold rush that has influenced Johns Creeks’ population as has it influenced its surrounding cities of Roswell, Alpharetta, Duluth, Norcross, Dunwoody, and Sandy Springs. These cities all northern suburbs of Atlanta are part of the golden triangle which includes Chamblee and Marietta. The golden triangle refers to the most affluent are of Atlanta and is the target of Real Estate Companies and other population oriented companies.

50 miles north is where America’s first gold rush was in the 1820’s and the tradition is still holding in Johns Creek. During that time Rogers Ferry and McGinnis Ferry would carry prospectors across the Chattahoochee River on their trek to Dahlonega where they would pan for gold.( A tourist site is still open there where gold panning still goes on.) Nesbitt Ferry offered another crossing point. This area including all these different ferry s became a cross road community where pioneers McGinnis, Findley, Buice, Cowart, Medlock, and Rogers gathered to sell crops. John Rogers later had a son he called Johnson K. Rogers and a tributary creek to the Chattahoochee River was named after him called Johns Creek.

Johns Creek High School

The first reference to Johns Creek in Fulton County was in 1981, it was the brainstorm of a group of Georgia Institute of Technology graduates. 1700 acres were bought for a technology park and they called it Technology Park/Johns Park. The 2010 census listed the population of the area known as John’s Creek at 76,728. Then in 2006 it was incorporated into the city of Johns Creek.

Becoming a high earning community, schools became a major part of the community. Dolvin elementary was dedicated to William J. Dolvin by Jimmy Carter and is still in operation with high regard today. All the schools are Fulton County Schools. The library too is part of the Fulton County Libraries.

William J. Dolvin was the principle of Roswell Elementary School in the 50’s and early 60’s. He then became Jimmy Carter’s Campaign manager when Carter ran for the Governorship of Georgia. At Mr. Dolvins’ death, Jimmy Carter named the school for him.

Athletics and arts are a celebrated part of the new Johns Creek city. Aspiring artists are invited to attend classes and camps at Johns Creek Arts Center. Arts on the Creek is a judged art show. The Tastes of Johns Creek is an annual food festival in the fall. They have the Founders’ Week Festival in December after the Family Festival in September. The Atlanta Athletic Club held the 2011 PGA Championship and in 2014 it held the U.S. Amateur Tournament. Johns Creek has several places for golf. They are Country Club of the South, Rivermont Golf and Country Club, River Pines Golf, St. Ives, and The Standard Club. The Atlanta Country Club also has the Atlanta Tennis Championships and the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA)has many members in Johns Creek.
